PMQs was dominated by the claims made by his former chief adviser, Dominic Cummings, during a seven hour marathon testimony. Boris Johnson refused to deny allegations that he dismissed coronavirus as “another scare story” and that he delayed a second lockdown because Covid was “only killing 80-year-olds.”
“83,000 people over 80 lost their lives to this virus, and his decision to delay for 40 days from the SAGE guidance on the 21st September until the 31st of October will be seen as one of the single biggest failings of last year” said Keir Starmer, who went on to question whether the PM used the phrase ‘only killing 80-year-olds’ to which he refused to clarify.
Starmer specifically asked Johnson to say whether he had played down concerns about coronavirus and objected to a lockdown in September and October because Covid deaths were by large amongst eldery. On both occasions the PM coldly avoided the questions.
“Either his former advisor is telling the truth, in which case the Prime Minister should answer the allegations. Or, the Prime Minister has to suggest that his former advisor is not telling the truth, which raises serious questions about the Prime Minister’s appointment in the first place.” Starmer stated, further going to state “There’s a pattern of behaviour here. There was clearly a lack of planning, poor decision-making and a lack of transparency.”
