Broadcaster and transgender activist India Willoughby has reported JK Rowling to the police, alleging the author and creator of the Harry Potter franchise committed a hate crime by deliberately referring to Willoughby as a man.

On Sunday, Rowling posted on X/Twitter her criticism of transgender women being allowed in women’s locker rooms saying “When men – all men, however they identify – are banned from women’s spaces, those who disregard the ban can be challenged, inside the space and out.” When another user responded with a video of India Willoughby asking “So you are saying this lady should use the men’s locker room then?!” Rowling responded claiming the video did not show a lady but “just a man revelling in his misogynistic performance of what he thinks ‘woman’ means: narcissistic, shallow and exhibitionist.”

In response, Willoughby revealed in an exclusive interview with Byline TV’s Caolan Robertson that she had reported Rowling to the police over the comments. Byline TV reached out to JK Rowling to discuss Willoughby’s claims but the request has gone unanswered, however she did respond to the interview on X/Twitter saying “Surprisingly for such an eminent legal authority, he appears to have forgotten that the Forstater ruling established that gender critical views can be protected in law as a philosophical belief. No law compels anyone to pretend to believe that India is a woman.”
